Function & Properties
ORNILUX® design introduces a sophisticated approach to bird protection with visible markings on the glass pane. This innovative solution incorporates a new coating process, complementing the traditional screen-printing technique. The visible patterns on the glass act as clear signals for birds, helping them recognize glass as an obstacle. Available in stylish dot and line variants, ORNILUX® design is the ideal choice when you seek both elegance and functionality in your design.
This glass from the ORNILUX® design family is perfect when an elegant aesthetic is required to serve dual purposes: as a beautiful design element and as effective bird protection. The markings provide maximum contrast in both reflection and transmission, enabling a level 1 bird protection solution that is both highly effective and visually appealing.
ORNILUX® design can be crafted as float glass or tempered safety glass—while tempering is optional, it is available upon request.
The new generation of dots offers an added benefit: its seamless design ensures cost-effectiveness and ease of handling. ORNILUX® mikado oHT (UV)
Function & Properties
ORNILUX® mikado coatings were meticulously developed to create bird-friendly glass façades while keeping the protective layer virtually invisible to the human eye. Drawing inspiration from nature, the subtle, spider-web-like texture is barely perceptible, yet remarkably effective in deterring bird strikes. ORNILUX® mikado glass integrates seamlessly into all windows and façades, just like conventional insulating or laminated safety glass. It can even be combined with additional functionalities such as solar control or thermal insulation in insulating glass without issue.
In regions like the USA, where bird-friendly façade design has been legally mandated in an increasing number of states, ORNILUX® mikado has consistently demonstrated its high protective efficacy.
The ORNILUX® mikado coating is nearly invisible to humans, but highly visible to birds. This is due to the unique structure of their vision, as birds possess four types of photoreceptive cones in their retina, allowing them to see UV radiation and a range of colors—enabling them to detect the ORNILUX® coating. The net-like design, inspired by nature, is applied to the glass using bionic technology, resembling a delicate spider web that reflects light in an elegant and effective way.

ORNILUX® mikado glass has undergone rigorous testing as laminated safety glass and insulating glass in combination with various thermal insulation and solar control layers. The results from several flight tunnel testing systems confirm that a significant proportion of birds successfully avoid all tested glass types. Moreover, most ORNILUX® mikado glass variants meet the American Bird Conservancy’s criteria for bird-friendly glazing, receiving the “Effective” category designation.
